The exhibition focusses on the theme of Animamix, illustrating the curator's interpretation of the variety of the artists' styles and the development of contemporary art in the 21st century. Organized around the dualities of East / West, Past / Future, Yin / Yang, Universe / Individual and Virtual / Real, this exhibition looks into the processes in which Asian contemporary arts, having been inspired by traditional art forms while at the same time significantly influenced by contemporary cultural forms such as anime or other forms of popular culture and intertwined with the social, political, economic, and cultural milieus in which the artwork is produced, develop new visual styles and languages that characterize the visual experience of our present century. It also demonstrates how the boundaries between the seemingly polarized pairs of concepts such as the Yin and the Yang or the feminine and the masculine have been transgressed in our time marked by increasing overlap of virtual and physical realities.
"Future Pass" explores the current trend of Asian contemporary art and anticipates its future development from a global perspective. The curator identifies four major features of contemporary Animamix: 1.) the pursuit of idealized youthful beauty; 2.) narrative images; 3.) splendid visual experiences and 4.) interdisciplinary production. These characteristics can be seen to suggest the increasingly diverse and hybrid nature of contemporary arts today, as contemporary artists – global citizens in today's world of visual arts with sources of information and cultural enrichment spreading throughout the world– articulate their experience of dispersal and fragmentation using methods of collage, mimicry, repurposing and so forth. These novel and exciting forms of visual display illustrate the complexity of cultural diversity in this digital era marked by globalization and inclusion. Through the splendid visual feast, the curator hopes to explore the new aesthetics from a contemporary Asian point of view.
Digital computing has revolutionized our modes of perception. With the rise of digital culture, the aesthetic taste and modes of communication of a whole youthful generation are now shaped by digital images of vastly different and innovative visual styles which are rich in allegory, metaphors and humor. From all areas of everyday practice, we are now witnessing the arrival of a new aesthetic of virtuality. It is time to declare, “Contemporary art is going cloud.”
This year marks the 10th anniversary year of the death of Chen Ting-shih, who died on 15th April 2002. The anniversary of Chen Ting-shih's death coincides with around the time of the Ching-ming Festival – a time of memorial to remember ancestors, loved ones and great pioneers in the Chinese tradition. To publicly express our memories for the great, all-round artist, we are holding a multi-disciplinary memorial exhibition of Chen Ting-shih's works which are organized around a sequence of poems. The exhibition format is inspired especially by two of the total of over one hundred and ninety solo or group exhibitions involving Chen Ting-shih. We believe that a comprehensive exhibition of Chen Ting-shih's works – poetry, calligraphy, poetic dialogues, rare stones, paintings and sculptures – would be the best way to illustrate the incredible talent and extraordinary life of the legendary artist. We hope that a memorial exhibition that celebrates the inexorably poetic character of Chen Ting-shih's art will exude poetic beauty like the artist's name suggests.
Art that verges on poetry
“Art has no limits; all creative practices are basically a matter of selection process.” (Chen Ting-shih)
Chen Ting-shih never stopped writing poetry. As a matter of fact, all his artworks – whatever the medium or form he chose – were driven by a poetic impulse. Chen Ting-shih wrote poetry of exquisite sensibilities with flowing, cursive calligraphic lines and expressed poetic sentiment with ink painting and prints. What's more amazing is that he would even find poetry through re-assembling damaged objects.
Bringing together East and West, traditional and modern
“Chen Ting-shih's greatest achievement is that he brought Western aesthetics to the Chinese artistic tradition, translating the mediums and expressive methods of abstract art into the visual language of Chinese symbolism. Chen Ting-shih was an artist of great significance. He made a valuable contribution in enhancing the understanding of Western abstract art by the Chinese public, and in so doing, substantially improved communication between Chinese and Western cultures.”
(Daniel Davison, Former Consultant, Taipei Fine Arts Museum)
Chen Ting-shih's art transcends the boundaries between bodies, objects, societies and events. It is then transformed into a metaphysical allegory, an artistic or illusionary event that enables us to depart from existing systems of knowledge in exploration of new possibilities.
The music of deep silence
One thing that sets Chen Ting-shih apart from other artists is that he has lived a life of soundlessness for a great part of his life and thus developed extraordinarily acute powers of observation and visualization. Although deprived of hearing from the age of eight, Chen Ting-shih was able to write beautiful poetry using memories of phonetic sounds from his early childhood. Each time he communicated with others through his poetry, he was in the act of refreshing those memories of phonetic sounds over and over again. Instead of speaking with human sounding voices, Chen Ting-shih spoke with his poetry. The sound that he made through his art was indeed the sound of poetry.
Chen Ting-shih utilized his special talent developed out of his physical conditions to produce movements that materialize the continuation of time. Movement, which inherently suggests variation, attracts visual attention. It is also through movement/variation of different kinds that we produce music, or differentiate weight from lightness. This exhibition provides and example of how a great artist turns his quiet observation and the rhythm of the mind into meaningful interpretation of variation.
Chen Ting-shih's art and poetry: continuous echoes and dialogues
Chen Ting-shih collected scrap iron, damaged ship parts, old furniture and other damaged everyday objects from the ship-breaking yard to re-build meaningful connections between them. This enriches the history of the material object itself while at the same time gives the artist a newfound sense of freedom, and creates for the viewers an expanded sense of time and space.
Chen Ting-shih invested in these objects with meanings intimately related to his own personal experience and memory as well as to Eastern cultures – loss of hearing, ancient rituals, the roots of the Chinese characters or his unique understanding of history and the universe. The interaction between the ball and the cube creates a unique visual feel of variation, not only giving off a sense of rhythm, but also signifies the dynamic relationship between the individual and the broader society.

“Imagination” has brought us the most beautiful fantasy, while “reality” has always destroyed our beautiful imagination to the least bit. Imagination and reality, as the two major themes of the work, strike the balance between the contradictory qualities. We cannot get away from the reality which stands in front us will cruelty unless we are supported by fantasy. The beautiful but yet illusionary imagination will make our life in reality more blissful.
As our imagination encourages us to believe, “cloud” is the symbol of fantasy, poetic and romantic. While we look at the floating cloud, we almost believe that no mundane thing can confine us. Freeing ourselves from the disturbance of the reality, we are indulged in the dream woven by ourselves. In the work “The City in the Sky,” Wang invites viewers into a world of cloud through their perceptual experience. The white cloud is beautiful and poetic, as how we imagine it, through which we dream the most beautiful dream. After walking up from the dream, we still need to return to the reality.
Spanning well over 70 years, Mr. Lin's long and outstanding artistic career coincided with the tumultuous period of modern Taiwanese history marked by vast political, social and cultural change. Lin Yu-shan's art was nurtured by various cultural and artistic traditions ranging from traditional Chinese folk painting, classical Japanese painting and Chinese painting of the Sung Dynasty to the ink paintings of the Chinese Cultural Renaissance Movement in the post-war Taiwan. Every stage of Lin Yu-shan's artistic development can be seen to reflect the social perspectives and cultural milieu of the time. It is through the reflections of the cultural climates of his day that Lin Yu-shan established his unique artistic vision.
Lin Yu-shan was not only an artist of the highest calibre, but also a dedicated art educationist, having fostered many successful gouache painters in his hometown Chiayi during the period of Japanese Colonial Rule, and taught for over 20 years at the Department of Fine Arts, National Taiwan Normal University in the post-war years. He successfully combined the artistic merits of gouache painting and Chinese ink painting to create painting from life rigorous in composition and rich in artistic vision. His unique artistic vision and immense contribution has had a far-reaching impact on generations of Taiwanese artists to come.
Lin Yu-shan's artistic career began in the period of Japanese Colonial Rule, under which the modernization of Taiwanese art was initiated. More specifically, during the course of the colonial period, the Japanese introduced to Taiwan, through the modern educational system, the knowledge and techniques of Western painting. This effectively took Taiwan's mainstream art practice from simply copying masterpieces of ancient Chinese ink painting to modern painting based on observations of the reality – a new, positivist approach which was aligned with the dominant trend of Western modern art of the time. By focussing on painting from life, Taiwanese artists were able to transform ordinary realities – the scenery, people, animals, plants and customs – into creative works of art. Professor Lin's works can be seen to exemplify this approach, which was considered groundbreaking at the time.
Throughout his artistic life – from studying in Japan on two separate occasions, to teaching Japanese painting in his hometown Chiayi during the era of Japanese Colonial rule, to teaching at the Fine Arts Department of the National Taiwan Normal University in the post-war period – Lin Yu-shan's art was most notably informed by close observations of the subjects. Lin placed greatest emphasis on painting from life, not only in his own art practice, but also in his teaching, noting that “painting from life is the foundation of all paintings and a crucial component of art-making. Instead of simply mimicking the physical appearance, the purpose of painting from life is in fact to try capturing the essence and spirit of the subject.” A rigorous painting from life practice has enabled Lin Yu-shan to vividly capture the essence and spirit of his subjects, and at the same time to an excellent command over a wide spectrum of themes including flowers and plants, birds and animals, scenery and landscapes.
This exhibition, Passing on a Lasting Legacy: Paintings by Lin Yu-shan coincided with the 105th anniversary of the birth of Lin Yu-shan to honor his artistic excellence and prolific contributions to Taiwanese art. It features a total of 46 pieces of gouache painting and ink painting as well as 25 pieces of plein-air painting. The works on display, created by Lin Yu-shan in the years between the 1920s and the 1990s, were done using sketching, water-color and ink-color techniques and cover a wide variety of subjects including flowers and plants, birds, animals and scenery. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to National Museum of History, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, the family of Professor Lin Yu-shan and other private collectors for their generosity in lending us the paintings which constitute a large part of this exhibition. We hope that this exhibition will give our viewing public a better understanding of Lin Yu-shan's unique artistic vision and influences.
