History

History and Future Prospects
National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts used to be known as Taiwan Museum of Art. At that time, Taiwan Provincial Government upheld the policy whereby central government strengthened cultural development, on the basis of the needs of the people and recommendations from figures in the world of the arts. On 8th February 1980, a meeting chaired by Chairman Lin Yang-kang resolved to establish the museum. In June, 1988, the museum was opened for operations under the auspices of the Taiwan Provincial Government’s department of education. In 1997 it was placed under the auspices of the Taiwan Provincial Government’s department of culture, and in 1999 the premises were closed for renovation. In July of the same year, because of the policy decision to downsize Taiwan Provincial Government, it was placed under the jurisdiction of the Council of Cultural Affairs (restructured as the Ministry of Culture on 20th May, 2012), and its name changed to National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, as it became Taiwan’s first national level museum of fine arts
